Play Reading: “The Importance of Being Earnest”
Join us on Saturday, February 22nd for a community reading of Oscar Wilde’s The Importance of Being Earnest. Subtitled “A Trivial Comedy for Serious People,” this farcical drama from the late nineteenth century is full of brilliant wit and gentle jabs at late Victorian manners. It depicts the humorous predicament of two young men who lead double lives in order to avoid social obligations, and consequently find themselves in a sticky situation with the two young women they are trying to woo. This play has remained popular both in film and on the stage, with audiences who find its repartee as funny today as when it was first produced.
Victorian tea and refreshments will be served at 6:30 p.m., followed by a full reading of the play at 7. We’ll assign parts then, so be thinking of which character you might want to be. You’re also welcome to come to simply listen, laugh, and enjoy. You can access a free virtual copy of the play here, and there will be a few extra physical copies available for use.
